Leaders with a high level of social awareness are able to contribute to the success and well-being of their teams and organisations.

It is common for leaders to attend both professional and social events. They will need to carry themselves well during these events and one of the most important traits they will need is a high level of social awareness.


I recently attended a corporate function and I couldn't help but notice a leader who, despite his impressive professional qualifications and seniority, seemed oblivious to the impact of his behaviour and words on those around him. His lack of social awareness was not only evident but also concerning, highlighting the importance of this attribute for leaders in today's corporate settings.


The Essence of Social Awareness


Social awareness is the ability to accurately perceive and understand the emotions, needs, and perspectives of others.

It involves recognising both verbal and non-verbal cues, cultivating empathy, and adapting one's behaviour to create positive interactions. In a corporate context, leaders with high social awareness excel in building strong relationships, resolving conflicts, and creating a harmonious work environment.


The Ramifications of Low Social Awareness


The leader I observed at the corporate function served as a stark reminder of how a lack of social awareness can hinder a leader's effectiveness:


  1. Conflict Escalation: When leaders fail to perceive and address underlying tensions, conflicts can escalate, disrupting team dynamics and hindering productivity.

  2. Decreased Morale: Employees who feel unheard or misunderstood may become disengaged and demotivated, leading to decreased morale within the organisation.

  3. Loss of Trust: Trust is the foundation of effective leadership. A leader with low social awareness may inadvertently breach trust through insensitivity or inappropriate behaviour.

  4. Communication Breakdown: Ineffective communication can hinder the flow of information, innovation, and collaboration within the organisation.

  5. Attrition: Employees who consistently experience discomfort or dissatisfaction due to a leader's behaviour are more likely to seek opportunities elsewhere, resulting in higher turnover rates.


Cultivating Social Awareness as a Leader


Fortunately, social awareness is a skill that can be developed and refined over time. Here are some suggestions for leaders looking to improve their social awareness:


  1. Active Listening: Pay close attention to what others are saying, and practice active listening by paraphrasing and asking clarifying questions. This demonstrates your genuine interest in their perspective.

  2. Empathy: Put yourself in others' shoes to understand their emotions and motivations. Empathy builds deeper connections and helps you respond more effectively to the needs of your team.

  3. Self-reflection: Regularly reflect on your own actions and their impact on others. Seek feedback from trusted colleagues or an executive coach to gain insights into areas where improvement is needed.

  4. Cultural Sensitivity: It's crucial to be culturally sensitive in today's diverse workplaces. Educate yourself about different cultures and their communication norms to avoid unintentional offences.

  5. Body Language Awareness: Learn to read non-verbal cues such as facial expressions, body posture, and tone of voice. This can provide valuable insights into how others are feeling.

  6. Conflict Resolution Skills: Invest in developing your conflict resolution skills. Be proactive in addressing issues before they escalate and create a hostile work environment.

Conclusion
