How Coaching Made Me a Better Family Man

Coaching is transformative as the enhanced presence, empathy, clear communication, and work-life integration have made me a better husband, father, and son.

Introduction

I am mostly known as a corporate guy by most people I know and that is not surprising as this has been predominantly my role for over 20 years (and counting!). Even though I am also an executive leadership coach, this seems to somewhat be in the shadow of my corporate role.

Personally, I find my coaching journey transformative and enriching for both my professional and personal lives.  My heart is full of gratitude as I feel coaching has profoundly benefited my role as a family man. I hope my sharing of the key insights that I have gained from this positive change will inspire people around me.

Life Before Coaching

Before I embraced the role of an executive leadership coach, I was mostly a driven corporate leader who was passionate about climbing the corporate ladder. I was dedicated to my job, but in my pursuit of professional success, I often found myself sacrificing precious family moments. I would frequently travel abroad, come home late, mentally preoccupied with work, and missed important family events. My wife and children were extremely understanding and supportive, but deep down inside I knew it was not right and I wanted to be a good family man.

The turning point came when I decided to explore executive coaching as a way to develop my leadership skills. Little did I know that this choice would not only transform my career but also my family life.

Life Today

As I immersed myself deeper into coaching, I learned to balance my professional and personal life more effectively. I began to set boundaries at work, prioritise my family, and allocate quality time for them. Slowly but surely, I saw the positive impact of my efforts. The missed family events were replaced with heartfelt conversations, and I became more engaged in my children's activities and interests.

One story that exemplifies this transformation occurred during a family vacation. Instead of being tethered to my phone and emails as I had been in the past, I made a conscious effort to unplug and be fully present with my family. We shared laughter, explored new places together, and created lasting memories. It was during that vacation that I realised the incredible power of being present and fully engaged with the people I loved most.

Over time, the empathy and communication skills I honed through coaching began to spill over into my family life. I started asking my family members about their aspirations, dreams, and concerns. These conversations opened up a new level of understanding and brought us closer together.

Key Insights From My Coaching Journey

#1: Enhanced Presence

One of the most remarkable shifts I have experienced since becoming an executive leadership coach is the heightened sense of presence in all aspects of my life. As I guide leaders through their own personal and professional growth, I have learned to be fully present with them, listening deeply and without judgment. This newfound presence extends far beyond the boardroom. I now bring this same attentiveness and intentionality to my interactions with my family.

I am able to cultivate a deeper connection with my loved ones by actively listening to them and giving them my undivided attention. This has allowed me to truly understand their needs, desires, and dreams, fostering a stronger and more meaningful family bond.

#2: Empathy and Compassion

Coaching has taught me the importance of empathy and compassion in leadership. These qualities have not only made me a better leader but have also made me a more compassionate family man. I have come to realise that everyone, including my family members, is on their own unique journey with their own challenges and aspirations.

I have created a more supportive and nurturing environment at home by approaching my family members with empathy and compassion. I have become more patient, understanding, and willing to offer a helping hand when needed. This shift has brought harmony and serenity to our household, enriching our lives immeasurably.

#3: Clear Communication

Effective communication is at the heart of executive coaching. I have learned that helping leaders articulate their vision and goals is paramount to their success. This valuable lesson has translated seamlessly into my role as a family man.

I have noticed that by practicing clear and open communication within my family, I have eliminated misunderstandings and conflicts. My loved ones and I now openly discuss our feelings, concerns, and aspirations. This has created an atmosphere of trust and mutual support, where each member feels heard and valued.

#4: Work-Life Integration

Coaching has shown me the importance of work-life integration rather than striving for an elusive work-life balance. Instead of compartmentalising my professional and personal lives, I have integrated the two more seamlessly.

This integration has allowed me to involve my family in my coaching journey, sharing my experiences and insights with them. It has brought a deeper understanding of my work to my family, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose.

Conclusion

My journey as an executive leadership coach has had a profound and positive impact on my role as a family man. I am filled with gratitude for the invaluable lessons I have learned and the transformations I have witnessed. The enhanced presence, empathy, clear communication, and work-life integration have not only made me a better leader but, more importantly, a better husband, father, and son.
